Your Glory

Thanks Brandon Lewis for sharing this!

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Jesus you are good!
Your glory is so beautiful
I fall unto my knees in awe
And the heartbeat of my life is to worship in your light
Because your glory is so beautiful.

Finding a Routine

Change is necessary and important, but there is still comfort and wisdom found in having a routine.  Routines help in bringing structure and dependability when everything else seems to be a whirlwind.  For some reason, the summer always seems to be a time of flux, and with the cooling air of the impending Fall Season creeping in, a little order and sanity seems to come with it.

Husbandman and I have been battling physical and emotional fatigue, as well as a cough that makes me sound like I'm dying and keeps us up at night.  Jon's days are filled with school and mine with work, but we are still trying to figure out what our new "normal" looks like.  We are trying to settling into a groove and find our routine.

There are some things that I am definitely excited about that I am sure will help with this, including finding a church, running consistently, working at a coffee shop a few days a week instead of the couch, and starting weekly rituals like making Kombucha or bread from a neighbor's sour dough starter.

I have also been trying to stick to a chore list and this 6 week meal plan.  So far, it's been awesome! I love always having the answer to "What's for dinner tonight?" and being able to buy exactly what we need.  I've always hated meal planning, so this takes the hard part out and just tells me what to cook. We are on week 5 and they have all been a great success.

Finding time to play with the neighbor's kids is important in our routine, too.  It's so great to have their happy faces around... and yes, that is Jon in the play tunnel.

It finally feels like we're finally starting to find our footing here and make this feel more like home.  Of course some days are way better than others, but it's getting easier with each day.

Morning Treat

I really love buttercream cupcakes. I really love coffee.  I really, really love cupcakes with coffee.

If it's my favorite coffee from Lamplighter back home, and homemade cupcakes from my favorite recipe, then I'm super happy.

It doesn't take much. It can even be the unglamorous last cupcake with the squished wrapper that I didn't feel right giving to anyone else.  It still tastes like a little bit of heaven.  It doesn't need sprinkles or special lighting or a fancy plate.  The coffee can do just fine in my favorite mug. No frills.

 It was a good morning.

2.5

General musings at 2.5 months into living in Memphis:
I am thankful for the blessings of...

-  today being Jon's first day in the classroom as a teacher!

-  having met Godly men and women and building friendships here already.  Especially for watching the Olympics in our living room.

-  seeing Mom Tobin last weekend in Nashville, even if it was only briefly.  And for her thoughtfulness of picking up a ton of Tennessee brochures and info packets to help acclimate us more to the area.
- having the 3 darling babies to play with all the time and constantly remind me of God's provision.
- the care package of Lamplighter coffee and Hardywood beer, homemade jam, and this little gem from the Clinches.

- the DeRoco girls on skype.  I can't even begin to describe how much seeing their faces filled me with joy.  I love each and every one of you and miss you all very much!

- how incredibly refreshing the Memphis Dawls and The Vespers show was that we went to at a local coffee shop.  It was good to be around good art, hear good music and enjoy a good beer.  Happy heart.

- finishing my first batch of kombucha tea today! I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing, but it's exciting to try something new!
- Baby Lu was born!  So excited to meet Sloane Valerie Lu soon.  Congrats Ken and Christine!

- new jeans. For some reason a new pair of great-fitting pants can really be a great pick-me-up.
- Tomatos being in peak season!

It is important to keep remembering the big picture of why we are here and not to get bogged down with the fears that come with moving to a new city.  I think I am most thankful for the people around me that have consistently helped in reminding me of that. We aren't here by some fluke or mistake or accident, we have been called here. If it's not always obvious, it doesn't mean it's not true.  We may have been here 2 and a half months, but it takes longer than that to realize the full picture. Things don't always come to fruition overnight, and it's that patient watchfulness that fills in the gaps between now and then.

Creative Outlet

When I do design all day long for work, I sometimes just do NOT want to do anything else after work.  I feel either that my creative outlet has been satisfied or just simply tapped out.

Other times, I just simply cannot get enough and will forgo any other task to keep creating.
Sleep? Maybe later.
Food? Only if it will feed itself to me.
Chores? I'll only make more mess, I'll do it later.

But in the end, the results of those focused and intese creative outbursts are something exciting.  I have learned a new skill, discovered something new about the world, failed enough times to succeed.  They are the times that I lean on when inspiration is running dry.

Here's a sneak peek at a current project that's got me all excited.  It's a gift for a friend and I can't wait to finish it!

Nashville

Since Jon normally has classes Monday morning through Saturday afternoon, we don't get much of a weekend.  The Saturday classes kind of put a damper on going anywhere fun.  Thankfully, they had a break this lsat weekend and were off both Friday and Saturday!  We took the opportunity to go and visit our dear friend Laurel in Nashville for the weekend. Best idea.

Hatch Show Print

She gave us a wonderful tour of the city, took us to Hatch Show Print, we went honky tonkin' (which let me assure you is quite an experience), ate great food, drank lots of yummy coffee, and did a bit of thrifting.

Crema Coffee

It was so great to get out of town and see a familiar face.  There is just a wonderful freedom in spending time with a good friend that brings a quiet to the soul... while at the same time allows you to feel completely fine being crazy and weird.  A much needed respite for us Tobins, indeed.

PS. did I mention that there is no Trader Joe's in Memphis?  We stocked up in Nashville. Nomnomnom!
